Guitar Tips

Let's start from the beginning.

If you are total beginner then I would recommend that you use a nylon-string guitar or an electric guitar. Do not use a steel-string acoustic guitar, because the strings are too tight and thick for beginners, and it can easily cause pain in the fingertips.

The index fingers on the left and right hands are referred to as finger 1, and the others are 2, 3 and 4. Our thumb is called T. Do the fingering exercise 1234, that means putting the fingers one by one on the finger board, and playing them in order, 1234. Pick the note with the right hand, and remember to use alternate picking, that means down for the 1st note, up for 2nd, down for 3rd etc. Start from fret 1 and then move on to fret 2. Repeat this exercise moving up the neck.

Pay attention to your left hand. Your finger tips should be at an angle of 90 degrees to the fret board. Refer to the pictures for more information, and don't rush. Do these exercises slowly and steadily.

There are more tips and some videos at the bottom of the page.

Some students find the sound is not totally correct when they play, most of the problems involve a lack of co-ordination with both hands, so please refer to the above pictures and adjust your position accordingly. If you still have problems, please make a note and ask me during your next lesson. Alternatively you can call me on (+852) 2381 0582 to ask me.
